Scope 1: Direct Fuel & Gas Emissions
How this business carbon footprint calculator works
This free calculator estimates your company's annual emissions in tonnes of CO2e across Scope 1, 2 and 3, using your energy, fuel, travel and waste figures. It multiplies each activity by an emission factor based on the UK Government's greenhouse gas conversion factors, then splits the total by scope so you can see where most of your footprint sits.
| Input | Scope | Factor used |
|---|---|---|
| Natural gas (kWh) | Scope 1 | 0.18 kg CO2e per kWh |
| Fleet fuel (litres) | Scope 1 | 2.68 kg CO2e per litre |
| Grid electricity (kWh) | Scope 2 | 0.131 kg CO2e per kWh (UK grid, DESNZ 2026 factors), reduced by your green tariff share |
| Business travel (km) | Scope 3 | 0.12 kg CO2e per km |
| Waste (kg) | Scope 3 | 0.5 kg CO2e per kg |
Factors are rounded averages for a quick estimate. A formal footprint uses the full UK Government GHG conversion factors for each fuel, vehicle and travel class, and follows the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard. See Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions explained for what each scope covers.
What the result is good for, and what it isn't
- Good for: a first baseline, spotting your biggest emission source, and preparing for a SECR report or a Carbon Reduction Plan.
- Not enough for: published disclosures, verified net zero claims or supplier questionnaires that ask for a full Scope 3 inventory. Those need activity data by category and location-based plus market-based Scope 2.
- Most SMEs find purchased goods and services dominate Scope 3. Try our Scope 3 Supply Chain Scanner to see which supplier categories matter.
FAQ
How do I calculate my company's carbon footprint?
Collect 12 months of activity data (energy bills, fuel cards, mileage, travel bookings and waste transfer notes), multiply each by the matching UK conversion factor, and add the results by scope. The calculator above does this in one step for the main sources.
Where do I find my electricity and gas usage?
Use the kWh figures on your supplier bills or annual statements, not the cost. Our guide to calculating Scope 2 from electricity bills shows where to look.
Does a green tariff make my electricity zero carbon?
Under market-based reporting, a tariff backed by REGOs can reduce Scope 2 to near zero. Under location-based reporting, you still use the grid factor. Most UK reports show both.
How accurate is an online calculator?
It is a reasonable estimate for direct energy and fuel, but usually misses most of Scope 3. Read how accurate online carbon footprint calculators are, or book a full carbon audit.
